THE IMPORTANCE OF CRATE IN A DOG'S LIFE
These days, crate/cage use remains a bit of a touchy subject to broach with anyone unfamiliar with the canine world. It's one of the topics we put a lot of effort into because it's vital to change people's mindset and inform them that the crate/cage is one of the fundamental tools for anyone who has a dog.
It continues to arouse a certain sense of guilt in many people who decide to adopt a dog. For humans, the crate is reminiscent of a prison, but in practice dogs, by nature, instinctively look for small places to have shelter, their protection. This “den” calms them down and gives them a sense of security. Most veterinarians and canine trainers recommend that you start training dogs, from puppies, in the use of the crate.
The crate is always an important tool: whether in training puppies, as a peaceful place for senior dogs, or as a “lifeguard” in emergency situations.
BENEFITS OF USING CRATE
1) A properly sized crate stimulates the dog's instinct not to relieve himself where he sleeps, helping him to control his bladder. This aspect could be very important if the dog, when they are older, has problems such as incontinence or arthritis, thus avoiding the additional stress of dealing with learning new rules.
2) Using a crate is a great way to keep your dog from doing something wrong when you can't supervise him directly. When you're busy cooking, doing some work around the house (or any other time your attention is elsewhere), it can be the perfect time for your dog to spend some time in the crate.
3) Speaking of rest time, crate training is a good way to train the dog to wait and enjoy alone time in relaxed conditions. As long as the dog is properly trained they will appreciate the quiet time in the crate.
4) Crates are also safe havens that help them calm down. Dogs may need this calm especially when they are with children or unruly dogs or even because of noises that frighten them, such as fireworks. This feeling of security is also very important for dogs that have already been victims of neglect or mistreatment.
5) Imagine that the first time your dog goes to a crate is at the vet or at the canine hotel. Having previous experience with the crate will be an advantage, otherwise it will be more natural for your dog to become anxious and stressed. Within this context, it is worth remembering that dogs that have to travel by plane will do so in a crate.
6) The crate, being a place of tranquillity and rest for your dog, reduces the development of separation anxiety.
7) If your dog has destructive behaviour, the crate keeps your dog and your home safe while you're away.
8) If your dog is always on the move during the night he will end up with an interrupted sleep pattern and, as we all know, that's not good. In the crate the dog will have a deep sleep and rest.
